Who we are?
The El Paso Center for Seizures and Epilepsy (EPCSE) is dedicated to the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of seizures and epilepsy in children—from newborns to young adults. We provide comprehensive, team-based care tailored to each patient. Our ultimate goal: No seizures, no side-effects.
We welcome follow-up visits, but are unfortunately not taking any new patients at this time. As part of our diagnostic services, we perform 30-minute routine video-electroencephalograms (EEGs) in the clinic when appropriate. For children who require more extended monitoring, we offer ambulatory video-EEGs that typically last around three days. These studies are set up in our office, after which the child returns home with the equipment and comes back at the end of the monitoring period to have it removed. In addition, Dr. Skjei provides EEG interpretation services for pediatric patients at hospitals throughout the El Paso area.
Meet our Team
Dr. Karen Skjei, Epileptologist / Founder

Dr. Skjei is a board-certified pediatric neurologist with a deep commitment to the health and well-being of children. Her journey in medicine began at University of California, San Francisco, where her passion for serving the Latino community took root. While at UCSF, she actively pursued electives in Latino Health and Medical Spanish, demonstrating an early dedication to culturally sensitive care. Her commitment to public service was further recognized with the esteemed Chancellor’s Award. Initially considering primary care, Dr. Skjei discovered her true calling during a rotation in pediatric neurology. The complexities of the field captivated her, and she recognized the significant need for specialists in this area, particularly in pediatric neurology. After seven impactful years, Dr. Skjei’s desire to make a greater difference in Latino Health led her to Texas. She served as the Director of Clinical Neurophysiology at Dell Medical School at UT-Austin, where she gained extensive experience and expertise in diagnosing and managing neurological conditions in children. During her time in Austin, Dr. Skjei recognized a critical gap in care. Several patients from El Paso shared their struggles in accessing specialized pediatric epilepsy care in their own community. This realization ignited Dr. Skjei’s passion to bring her expertise directly to the children and families of El Paso.
Dr. Skjei’s dedication lies in providing comprehensive and compassionate care for a range of pediatric neurological conditions, with a particular focus on epilepsy. She is driven by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of her patients and address the specific healthcare needs of the El Paso community.
